A number of World War I Kansas soldiers' letters and photographs have recently been added to Kansas Memory. The letters were from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th Infantry Divisions) and from the Gold Star Mothers, an organization of mothers who had lost a child in the service of their country.
A number of letters were from soldiers who only made it as far as Camp Funston before they were stricken with the Spanish Influenza. Many letters came from France, or as the boys wrote, "Somewhere in France" or "Over there." Some soldiers mentioned their experience on the battlefield--many served in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
